Growing Skills, Growing Communities

During Adult Learners Week, Read Write Now brought volunteer tutors together for a series of practical training sessions designed to strengthen their skills, confidence and knowledge when supporting adult learners.

Held as part of this year’s Follow Your Compass: Learning for Life celebrations, the sessions were also a reminder that learning never stops — including for our volunteer tutors.

Our tutors generously give their time to help adults across Western Australia build confidence in reading, writing, maths and digital skills. At the same time, they continue developing their own knowledge, exploring new approaches and strengthening the skills they bring to their tutoring relationships.

The sessions focused on areas that can make a real difference in everyday practice, including digital inclusion, supporting learners with disability and neurodivergence, and effective online tutoring strategies.

Each session created an opportunity to share ideas, explore practical strategies and build confidence in responding to the diverse needs of adult learners.

This commitment to ongoing learning is an important part of volunteering with Read Write Now. Our tutors are not only helping someone else move forward on their learning journey — they are continuing their own journey of lifelong learning, skills development and discovery.

Targeted training like this strengthens more than individual tutoring practice. It also builds the wider capacity of our communities to provide inclusive, flexible and meaningful learning opportunities for adults across WA.

Adult Learners Week runs from 1–8 September each year and celebrates the many different ways adults continue to learn, grow and discover new possibilities throughout life.
