Language, literacy, numeracy and digital literacy (LLND) skills are often seen as “school skills,” but in reality they are essential in almost every apprenticeship and trade pathway — from construction and automotive work to hospitality and community services.
More than reading and writing
Apprentices use literacy every day: reading safety instructions, following work orders, completing forms, and communicating with supervisors. In many industries, a misunderstanding of written instructions can directly affect safety, quality, or efficiency.
Numeracy is just as important. Measuring materials, estimating quantities, calculating ratios, and managing timeframes are routine parts of most trades. Research in vocational education shows numeracy gaps are one of the most common challenges in early apprenticeship stages.
Digital literacy is now equally critical. Apprentices are expected to use online learning platforms, log competencies, complete digital assessments, and navigate workplace systems — often from the very beginning of training.
Why this matters in apprenticeships
Apprenticeships rely on “learning on the job,” which means workers must absorb and apply new information quickly in real environments. Without strong LLND skills, even highly capable learners can struggle to keep up with training expectations, especially in the first year.
National training data has consistently shown that LLND challenges contribute to delays in completion and, in some cases, early withdrawal — not due to lack of trade ability, but because of hidden literacy and numeracy demands.
The bigger picture
Apprenticeships are most successful when technical training and foundational skills develop together. When LLND support is in place, apprentices are more confident, more productive, and more likely to complete their qualifications.
Read Write Now originally began in Western Australia over 40 years ago as an apprentice support initiative, helping adults strengthen the foundational skills needed to succeed in vocational training.
At its core, LLND is not separate from trade learning — it is what makes it possible to succeed in it.
