Maths literacy, or numeracy, is about more than numbers — it’s the ability to use maths confidently in everyday life. It supports problem-solving, reasoning, and informed decision-making at home, work, and in the community.
Everyday Challenges
Without these skills, tasks like budgeting, understanding bills, measuring, or calculating travel time can be challenging. Numeracy is also key to financial wellbeing — helping people manage money, compare costs, and understand things like interest and loans. This is a real issue in Australia, where adult numeracy levels remain a significant concern.
At Read Write Now, we’re seeing growing demand for maths and financial literacy support, especially from adults preparing for further study. Maths is a key requirement in many TAFE courses and vocational pathways, and can be a barrier for learners returning to study. Areas such as nursing, surveying, and apprenticeships (including trades like carpentry, plumbing, and electrical) all require practical maths skills — from measurements and calculations to interpreting data and formulas.
Our trained volunteer tutors offer one-to-one support tailored to individual goals — from everyday calculations and budgeting to building skills for study and work.
Strong numeracy skills build confidence, open opportunities, and support independence in everyday life.
